Consideraciones históricas: Liddle (1928), llamó Arena de Santa Bárbara, a la parte inferior de los sedimentos incluídos hoy en la Formación La Rosa. Sutton (1946), describió el Miembro de Arena Basal de Santa Bárbara en los campos costaneros del distrito Bolívar, como areniscas pobremente consolidadas de aguas salobres a marinas, muchas de ellas muy arcillosas, con intercalaciones frecuentes de arcillas laminares. Pese a su homonimia con otras unidades descritas con el mismo nombre, el término es válido por haberse establecido la invalidez de aquéllas. Dusenbury (1956, Léxico Estratigráfico de Venezuela) analizó detalladamente las diversas subdivisiones de la Formación La Rosa. La Arena Santa Bárbara, es productora de petróleo en los campos costaneros de Bolívar, lago de Maracaibo.
