El término Miembro Amacuro fue introducido y publicado por Mencher et al. (1951), para designar el miembro inferior de los tres que componen la Formación La Pica, en el campo de Pedernales y en la parte norte del delta del Orinoco, Territorio Federal Delta Amacuro, donde la unidad es productora de petróleo. Barnola (1960) describió su litología, y De Sisto (1960), lo correlacionó con la parte inferior de la Zona "E" y toda la Zona "F" del área mayor de Santa Bárbara, al norte del Estado Monagas.
