Las arenas petrolíferas en la parte basal de la Formacion Lagunillas fueron divididas informalmente en "zona o grupo de Petróleo Pesado" (Heavy Oil zone or group) y "zona o grupo de Petróleo Liviano" (Light Oil group zone), abreviados frecuentemente a: H. O. Z. y L. O. Z. (Staff of Caribbean Petroleum Company, 1948; Szenk, 1959).
