Este nombre fue empleado por Kündig (1938-a, b) para designar la "Serie de Río Momboy" de Liddle (1928). Pierce (1960) utilizó el término Formación Río Momboy. Posteriormente, Compañía Shell y Creole (1964) demostraron que es sinónimo innecesario de la Formación Mucuchachí.
