Estos términos informales ("Lagunillas Sand", "Lagunillas Tar Sand"), fueron introducidos para designar subdivisiones menores locales de la Formación Lagunillas en el lago de Maracaibo. Szenk (1959) consideró estas arenas como parte inferior de su Miembro Lagunillas de la Formación Lagunillas.
