Algunos autores (Liddle, 1928, 1946; Staff of Caribbean Petroleum Company, 1948; Kehrer, 1956) han utilizado este término inadecuado ("sandy shales"), cuya sinonimia con la Formación Carbonera fue establecida por Hedberg (1949).
