Liddle (1946, p. 426) empleó este nombre para designar areniscas petrolíferas, muy finamente estratificadas, de la Formación Agua Clara en el campo petrolífero de Hombre Pintado, estado Falcón. Chappel (1956, Léxico Estratigráfico de Venezuela) señaló que la arenisca de Hombre Pintado y las arenas petrolíferas de Hombre Pintado representan horizontes diferentes.
