Garner (1926) introdujo estos términos para designar afloramientos locales de lutitas cretáceas cerca de Guanoco, estado Sucre, que actualmente se asignan al Grupo Guayuta, en el sentido empleado por Hedberg (1937-a, b). Liddle (1928) utilizó el término "serie Guanoco" en sentido similar al de Garner (1926).
