Senn (1935) introdujo el nombre de "El Mene, Formación de arena" (El Mene-sandformation); posteriormente, el mismo autor (1940) se refirió a la unidad indiferentemente como: Arenas de El Mene de Acosta; Arenas de El Mene y Formación El Mene de Acosta.
El nombre El Mene ha sido empleado para designar unidades completamente distintas en otros lugares de Venezuela (Hedberg, 1938-a, b); por esta razón y por su sinonimia con el Miembro de Arenas de El Salto, el término se considera inválido.
