Esta zona fue definida en la Formación Vidoño por Hedberg y Pyre (1944). Autores más recientes (Bolli, 1957; Stanley, 1960; Renz, 1962; Lamb, 1964) han aplicado zonaciones más precisas a base de foraminíferos planctónicos en la Formación Vidoño, de donde el término ha caído en desuso.
