Sutton (1946) empleó el nombre de "Grupo Cachirí" para designar los sedimentos que Liddle (1928) había llamado "Serie de Río Cachirí". El nombre válido actual de estos sedimentos es el de Grupo Río Cachirí. El "Grupo Cachirí" del Devónico no debe confundirse con la caliza de Cachirí de Garner (1926), nombre en desuso, empleado por este autor para designar la sección fallada del Grupo Cogollo del Cretáceo Medio en el curso inferior del río Cachirí.
