Consideraciones históricas: El término Miembro Colorado fue publicado originalmente por Funkhouser et al. (1948), para designar el más inferior de los siete miembros informales en que dividieron a la Formación Oficina, en el area mayor de Anaco, Anzoátegui central. Consiste principalmente en lutitas, con varios intervalos de areniscas de grano fino a grueso. El espesor varía entre 335 y 480 m. Hacia abajo, pasa transicionalmente a la Formación Merecure. De Sisto (1959) lo correlacionó con las arenas R-3 a U-1 de la Formación Oficina, en el area mayor de Oficina, Anzoátegui central.
