Este nombre fue empleado por Sutton (1946) para designar una secuencia de lutitas y calizas expuesta en la región de Churuguarita, Estado Zulia; en este sentido es sinónimo de la Formación Agua Negra de Senn (1935), posteriormente elevada a rango de grupo.
