TABLAZOS, Formación
TERTIARY (Pliocene)
State of Zulia, Venezuela
Synonymun of SAN GREGORIO, Formation.
Author of name: A. H. Garner, 1926.
Original reference: A. H. Garner, 1926, p. 683.
Original description: ibid.
The Tablazos formation was originally named and described by Garner (1926, p. 683). The type locality is in the vicinity of the town of Los Tablazos, eastern District of Miranda, State of Zulia.
According to Garner, the formation, which he considers of Quaternary age, is made-up of sandstones and clays. The sandstones are badly eonsolidated, poorly sorted and present cross-bedding. The clays are white and mottled. Liddle (1946, p. 507) states that the conglomerate of the "Tablazos beds" (misspelled) containing ferruginous concretions filled with clay, generally occur as protective caps on mesas, hills and slopes of La Puerta sediments.
Sutton (1946, p. 1711) believes that it is possible to correlate the Cerro Vigía formation (Pliocene) with the "Tablazos conglomerates" of Garner.
The Tablazos formation of Garner is today considered as a synonym of the San Gregorio formation (see).
