TOAS, Limestone

TERTIARY (Paleocene)

State of Zulia, Venezuela

Synonym of GUASARE, Formation.

Author of name: R. Engleman, 1935.

Original reference: R. Engleman, 1935, p. 788.

Original description: none published.

The name Toas limestone appears incidentally in a paper by Engleman (1935, p. 788):

"...The Toas limestone, with its diagnostic Venericardia planicosta and abundantly fossiliferous strata. . . "

In a footnote, Engleman attributes the name to Liddle (1928) but Liddle, although he makes reference to limestone with Venericardia planicosta on Toas island, nowhere uses "Toes limestone" as a formation name. The same is the case with Maury (1925, p. 412), who cites "Lower Eocene" with "large, smooth Venericardia planicosta" from "Taos" (sic) island but does not use a formational name. The name does not appear to have been used by other authors, except that Hedberg (1937, p. 1999), mentions the "Toes Island limestone" as a correlative of the Guasare and Soldado formations and of the "Venericardia planicosta horizon of Cerro Corazón" (there included by Hedberg in his Santa Anita "formation").
