SEGOVIA, Group
LOWER CRETACEOUS
State of Lara, Venezuela
Author of name: L. V. Dalton, 1912.
Original reference: L. V. Dalton, 1912, p. 41.
Original description: ibid.
The term Segovia group was established by L. V. Dalton for the "series of red and yellow sandstone, shales, slates, and black bituminous limestone" exposed in the Segovia highlands (area Carora-Barquisimeto) (Dalton, 1912, p. 41). The beds overlie the Caribbean complex and carry ammonites and Inocerami; L. V. Dalton compares them to the Capacho limestone of Sievers from Táchira.
R. A. Liddle replaced the group term by his Segovia series (Liddle, 1928, p. 108).
The Segovia group includes the Lower Cretaceous Barranquín formation (Hedberg, 1950, p. 1187) and the greater part of the Cogollo group.
