According to Liddle (1928, p. 101) the "Old Series" is a name which has for a long time been applied to series of brick-red shales, deep-red, fine sandstones, and gray quartzites, outcropping in a broad belt in the Sierra de Perijá and in the Venezuelan Andes of wsetern Venezuela.

Subsequence studied have proven that the Old Red Series comprises part or whole of the Permo-Carboniferous Palmarito formation and the Triassic La Quinta formation. The name "Old Red Series" is obsolete.

This also appliesto the "Red formation" of Oppenheim (1938, p. 39).
