CRETACEOUS (Albian)
State of Monagas, Venezuela
Author of name: R. Arnold, 1913 (private report).
Original reference: A. H. Garner, 1926, p. 677.
Original description: ibid.
The term Punceres series was first used by R, Arnold (1913, private report). In 1926, A. H. Garner published the name Punceres sandstone which he characterized as a "massive, dark brown to red, coarse, hard sandstone" which alternates in the upper part with "black shale and dark grey limestone" (Garner, 1926, p. 679). The thickness of the Punceres sandstone, which is named after the outcrops in the hills north and northwest of the village of Punceres, Monagas, is estimated to exceed 500 feet.
On his Correlation Chart, A. H. Garner places the Punceres sandstone below his Guácharo limestone (Garner, 1926, p. 678); the latter is correlated with his Río Cogollo limestone.
H. D. Hedberg correlates the Punceres sandstone with the Barranquin formation (Hedberg, 1937, p. 1948). According to recent field work (E. Rod), the sandstone outcrops near the village of Punceres are referable to the Chimana formation.
The name Punceres sandstone is obsolete.
