State of Anzoátegui, Venezuela

Author of name: R. A. Wilson, 1943 (private report).

Original reference: H. D. Hedberg, 1950, p. 1207.

Original description: ibid.

Wilson described the Pando formation in a private report in 1943. The name is from the exposures in the Morichal Pando, which is situated in the extreme southeastern portion of the District of Freites, State of Anzoátegui.

Hedberg (1950, p. 1207) while writing of the Las Piedras formation, says: ". . . A unit of reddish sandstone equivalent to the upper part of the Sacacual group in the area east of the Leona oil field in south-central Anzoátegui is known as the Pando formation".

The age of the Pando formation is considered to be Pliocene. It is approximately a lateral equivalent of the Algarrobo formation encountered further to the west.
