MAJAGUAL, Formation
CRETACEOUS (Cenomanian)
State of Sucre, Venezuela
Author of name: E. Rod, 1952 (private report).
Original reference: E. Rod and W. Maync, 1954, p. 252.
Original description: ibid.
In the region south of Cariaco, Sucre, E. Rod observed (1952) massive gray, well-bedded, slightly crystalline or coquinoid limestones with some marl interlayers in the upper part. This limestone unit, which rests conformably on the Chimana formation and grades into the Upper Cretaceous Querecual formation, attains a thickness of 100 meters.
Puerto Majagual on Río Carinicuao, south of Cariaco, Sucre, was chosen as type locality.
As is evidenced by its stratigraphic position, the Majagual formation is a facies equivalent of the Boquerón formation; both are assigned to the Vraconian-Cenomanian, accordingly.
