Original description: none published.
Liddle (1946, correlation chart) showed "Los Algodones" in the upper Miocene of central Falcón. On his chart the unit is shown to overlie the "Capadare" or "Pueblo Cumarebo" conformably and to be conformably overlain by the "La Vela".
Mencher et al. (1951, correlation chart) showed the Algodones formation in the upper Miocene of western Falcón. The formation is showon to rest conformably on the Chiguaje formation and to be overlain unconformably by the San Gregorio formation.
Information taken from private reports indicates that the type section of the Algodones formation is located 4.5 kilometers east of Río Seco, near the old house of Algodones. The formation consist of interbedded lenticular beds of yellow, brown, red, gray, and white clays, silts and sands. A few ferruginous dark brown, hard, conglomeratic sandstones are present as local lenses. At the type locality the formation is 244 meters thick. In the Río Codore it is 518 meters thick. The lower contact of the formation is conformable with yhe underlying Chiguaje formation. The Algodones formation the formation extend throuh north-central and northwestern Falcón. A number of geologists regard the Algodones formation as the uppermost of three formations which they place in the "Codore group", while another group of geologists consider the Algodones to be the upper member of the Codore formation.
