QUIROZ, Formation
TERTIARY (Oligocene to Miocene)
State of Zulia, Venezuela
Author of name: C. J. Maury, 1925.
Original reference: C. J. Maury, 1925, p. 411.
Original description: A. H. Garner, 1926, p. 682.
Garner (1926, p. 682) described massive, fairly hard, brown sandstone, fossiliferous, grey limestone lenses and fossiliferous, dark-grey shale from the vicinity of the small village of Quiroz and the Quiroz camp of the Caribbean Petroleum Company, in the district of Miranda, State of Zulia. According to Sutton (1946, p. 1700) the Lagunillas exposures on the Quiroz structure form the upper part of the Quiroz formation of Garner. The name, Quiroz formation, is obsolete. Quiros formation, as used by Maury and Garner, is a misspelling.
