From the Guasare river in the vicinity of a ranch called Los Melones (misspelled by Garner as Los Melones), Páez district, State of Zulia, Garner (1926, p. 681) described dark brown, fairly soft, sandy shales, with a few beds of massive, brown sandstone and brown shales and assigned these sediments to the Oligocene or lower Miocene. According to Sutton (1946, p. 1704), Garner's Los Melones formation is the equivalent to the lower and middle Miocene Los Ranchos formation. The name Los Melones formation is obsolete.
