LLANOS, Serie
TERTIARY (middle Miocene to Pliocene)
State of Monagas, Venezela
Synonym of QUIRIQUIRE FORMATION
Author of name: J. H. Regan, 1938.
Original reference: J. H. Regan, 1938, p. 200.
Original description: ibid.
J. H. Regan (1938, p. 200) in his stratigraphic section of the Quiriquire Oil Fields proposes the name Llanos series (in the Spanish edition: Los Llanos, grupo de) as a derivation from the name Quiriquire formation, considered by him Pliocene in age and today middle Miocene to Pliocene. The original description is that of the Quiriquire formation (ibid., p. 190) which is considered by Regan as "the piedmont depositional facies of the Llanos beds in the foothills northern Monagas".
The name Llanos, as used by Regan, is practically homonymous with that of Garner, 1926, badly defined but seemingly applicable to Quaternary sediments, at least in part, of the Mesa formation (see LLANOS FORMATION). The names proposed by Garner and by Regan are today obsolete.
