GUANARE, Formation
TERTIARY ? (Pliocene?), QUATERNARY ? (Pleistocene?)
State of Portuguesa, Venezuela
Author of name: Garner, 1926.
Original reference: Garner, 1926, p. 68.
Original description: ibid.
The Guanare formation was originally named and described by Garner (1926, p. 682) who considers it of Miocene age. The type-locality forms small hills to the west of the town of Guanare, State of Portuguesa.
According to Garner, the Guanare formation is made-up of slightly consolidated, coarse-grained, reddish-brwn sandstones, interbedded with write and brown ferruginous clays. The original description is so unprecise that it is possible to determine whether the name Guanare formation of Garner refers to the same Quaternary sediments called by Argabrite (1924) (fide Liddle, 1928) Guanare outwash apron, or if it is actually an older unit.
