GREEN, Series

TERTIARY

State of Monagas, Venezuela

Author of name: A. J. Freie, 1937 (private report).

Original reference: J. H. Regan, 1938, p. 191.

Original description: ibid.

Regan (1938, p. 191) stated that the "Green Series" ("Verde formation" of Regan, 1938, p. 189-190, Spanish edition) lies unconformably on the "Monagas shale" and unconformably below the Quiriquire formation covering the northern three-quarters of Quiriquire field. He pointed out that the Ethology of this subsurface unit is variable. In the western part of the field it consists of indurated, fine-grained, thin and cross-bedded, fractured, glauconitic, grayish green sandstone; in the northeastern part the "series" begins to show a change of facies, according to Regan, with less glauconite and more shale; and toward the central part of the field it consists of a hard unstratified yellowish brown shale. Regan cited a maximum thickness of 500 feet for the "Green Series" in the north and northwest part of the field. He mentioned that the age of the unit was not definitely known because of the paucity of paleontological data. He suggested a possible middle Miocene age based on sparse and poorly preserved foraminifera.

Information taken from private reports indicates that the name "Green Series" was applied rather indiscriminately to glauconitic beds of the Quiriquire, Buena Vista or Mundo Nuevo formations. Therefore, the name "Green Series" became obsolete and has been dropped.
