CUMANACOA, Limestone
LOWER CRETACEOUS
State of Sucre, Venezuela
Author of name: A. von Humboldt, 1928.
Original reference: A. von Humboldt, 1825, p. 583, etc.
Original description: ibid.
In his famous work "Reise in die Aequinoctialgegenden", 1825, A. von Eumboldt introduced the "Formation des Dichten Kalksteins von Cumanacoa" (formation of dense limestone of Cumanacoa) which he compared to his "Formation des Dichten Kalkstein von Caripe" (formation of dense limestone of Caripe).
H. Karsten referred these limestones of Cumanacoa, Caripe, Bergantín, etc., to the Lower Cretaceous (Karsten, 1850, p. 345; 1886, p. 9).
W. Sievers correlated them with his Capacho limestone of Táchira and with his Barbacoas limestone of Lara which he considered to be younger than Upper Albian (Sievers, 1888, p. 24; 1896, p. 249).
Due to structural complications in the Cumanacoa region and because no accurate type locality has been designated, it is hardly posible to give a modern interpretation of the Cumanacoa limestone; it could either be referred to the Guácharo member (Chimana formation) or to the Borracha formation (Rod).
The term is not used.
