CULATA, glauconitic marl
TERTIARY (middle Oligocene?)
State of Falcón, Venezuela
Author of name: H. C. Kugler and L. Vonderschmitt, 1925 (private report).
Original reference: H. H. Renz, 1948, p. 18.
Original description: ibid.
This unit was named Culata beds by H. G. Kugler and L. Vondersehmitt in 1925 (private report) after the vecindario La Culata, north-northeast of Pozón, District of Acosta, Falcón. Later it was referred to as Culata glauconite or Culata greensand (private reports) but H. H. Renz (1948, p. 18) who first published the name, suggested that it might better be termed Culata glauconitic marl. In the La Culata area, north-northeast of Pozón, the El Salto sand member of the San Lorenzo formation (Agua Salada group) is laterally replaced by a highly glauconitic rock, now termed Culata glauconitic marl. Its thickness is variable and ranges from 20 to 170 meters. A probable middle Oligocene age can be assigned to this unit.
