Original description: ibid.
The name Bergantín sandstones was introduced by A. Von Humboldt (1825, p. 583) for the sandstones exposed in the Bergantín area, Anzoátegui. H. Karsten referred them to the Lower Cretaceous (Karsten, 1850, p. 345; see Sievers. 1896, p. 247).
According to H. D. Hedberg, no sediments are exposed in the Bergantín region below the limestones of the Bergantín beds (Hedberg, 1937). The Bergantín sandstones should, consequently, be referred either to a sandstone within the Bergantín beds (Chimana formation), of to the Upper Cretaceous (San antonioformation, San Juan sandstone), or at least in part to Lower Tertiary Merecure Group.
The name Bergantín sandstones in not used.
